Garnet

Garnet is the traditional birthstone of the month of January.

Though the traditional colour for garnet is red, there are many other colours in which garnets can come (including orange, brown, green and yellow), some of which have their own name depending on composition and origin, see garnet, mandarin garnet, demantoid garnet, Tsavorite Garnet for further details.

Traditional red garnet is quite easy to come by and can be relatively inexpensive. It was often carried by people as a protective measure or talisman which could protect its wearer from harm.
