Moonstones are famous for the beautiful play of light they display. The most desirable colour is blue, though they can also be purchased in white, pink, brown and green. It is a variety of the mineral orthoclase feldspar.
Blue are the most expensive, and large fine specimens will cost you dearly. However smaller gems in varying colours can be picked up for quite reasonable prices. The shimmer which gives this stone its value is caused by a phenomenon called 'adularisation’.
In many cultures this gem is linked with superstitions. In some Arabic cultured women carry this gem to help their fertility, while In India it is believed the gem will bring the wearer beautiful dreams at night.
