Sapphires is the birthstone for September
Sapphire
Sapphire’s are loved by many for their vibrant blue colour. They are a blue variety of the mineral Corundum.
Part of the value of sapphires is decided not only by brilliance and clarity but also on colour. While many may think dark or light sapphires are worth more it is in fact the most intense bright blues that are valued most along with the so-called star sapphires.
Sapphire is regarded as the traditional birthstone for September and in some cultures, the sapphire is the traditional gift for the 45th wedding anniversary.
At 563 carats,The largest and most famous sapphire is probably the “star of India”. It was formed around 2 billion years ago. Star sapphires are formed by a process called asterism. It causes inclusions which show up a like six-fingered star under an overhead light source. These sapphires are rare and the value is greatly affected by the quality of the “star.”
